Gibfield Colliery. Atherton, Lancashire.

by Neil Anderson. Acrylics on canvas board.

A notable feature of Gibfield Colliery was the opening, in September 1913, of the first pit head baths at any colliery in the country; no longer did the colliers return home dirty, to be scrubbed in a tub by the fire.

The colliery closed in 1963.
